Add 10% GST to a price, or work out the GST inside a total.
How GST works in Australia
Australian GST is 10 percent of the price before GST. To add it, multiply by 1.10: a price of 1,000 becomes 1,100. To take it out, divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.10: 1,100 contains 100 of GST.
Some supplies are GST-free or input-taxed, so check with the ATO if you are unsure how your work is treated. If you are registered, quote consumers the GST-inclusive price and show the GST amount on your tax invoice.
Common questions
How do I calculate GST in Australia?
Multiply the price before GST by 0.10 to get the GST, or by 1.10 to get the price including GST. To work backwards, divide a GST-inclusive total by 11 to find the GST in it.
Do I charge GST if I am not registered?
No. Only businesses registered for GST charge it. Registration is required once your GST turnover reaches the threshold, and optional below it. Our guide to GST for tradies explains the rules.
