How GST works in New Zealand

New Zealand GST is 15 percent of the price before GST. To add it, multiply by 1.15: 100 becomes 115. To take it out, divide a GST-inclusive total by 1.15: 115 contains 15 of GST.

Make it clear on every quote and invoice whether a price includes GST. Inland Revenue calls the record a GST-registered business gives a buyer taxable supply information, and what it must show depends on the size of the sale.

A quicker way to find the GST inside a total is the fraction 3/23. Inland Revenue’s example: $100 including GST contains 3/23 of $100, or $13.04 of GST.

Common questions

How do I calculate GST in New Zealand?

Multiply the price before GST by 0.15 to get the GST, or by 1.15 to get the price including GST. To work backwards, divide a GST-inclusive total by 1.15 to find the price before GST, then subtract it from the total.

Do I charge GST if I am not registered?

No. Only GST-registered businesses charge GST. Check with Inland Revenue when you need to register.

When do I have to register for GST in New Zealand?

When your sales from a taxable activity are at least NZ$60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect them to be in the next 12, or when you add GST to your prices. Below that you can still register voluntarily. Check with Inland Revenue for your situation.

What is the 3/23 GST fraction?

It is the share of a GST-inclusive price that is GST at 15 percent. Multiply the total by 3 and divide by 23: 115 × 3 ÷ 23 = 15. It gives the same answer as dividing by 1.15 and subtracting.
