UK VAT calculator
Add VAT to a price, or find the VAT inside a total, at the standard 20%, reduced 5% or zero rate.
How VAT works in the UK
The standard rate of UK VAT is 20 percent, and it applies to most goods and services. To add VAT, multiply by 1.20: 100 becomes 120. To take it out, divide a VAT-inclusive total by 1.20: 120 contains 20 of VAT.
A reduced rate of 5 percent applies to some goods and services, and some supplies are zero-rated at 0 percent. Check GOV.UK for the rate that applies to your job: some building work, such as certain new-build housing or energy-saving installations, is reduced-rated or zero-rated. Zero-rated and exempt are different: neither has VAT added for the customer, but exempt supplies sit outside the VAT system, so ask HMRC how your work is classed.
Common questions
How do I calculate VAT at 20 percent?
Multiply the price before VAT by 0.20 to get the VAT, or by 1.20 to get the price including VAT. To work backwards, divide a VAT-inclusive total by 6 to find the VAT in it.
Which VAT rate do I charge?
Use the standard rate of 20 percent unless the goods or services are reduced-rated at 5 percent or zero-rated. GOV.UK lists which is which. Only VAT-registered businesses charge VAT.
