How break-even works

Each sale leaves a profit per unit: the price minus the cost of making or delivering it. Divide your fixed costs by that number to get the sales you need to break even.

Fixed costs are the bills you pay whatever you sell, such as rent, insurance and software. Everything above the break-even point is profit.

Common questions

What counts as a fixed cost?

Costs that do not change with how much you sell, such as rent, insurance, vehicle payments, software and a regular wage. Costs that rise with each job, such as materials, belong in the cost per unit.

What is a unit for a service business?

Pick one that fits, such as a job, a visit or an hour. Use the average price and the average direct cost for that unit.

How can I lower my break-even point?

Cut fixed costs, raise your price, or lower the cost of each unit. Even a small price rise can cut the number of sales you need by a lot.
