What ROI means

Return on investment (ROI) is your gain divided by what you put in, as a percentage. Put in 10,000, get back 13,500, and your ROI is 35%.

Time matters. The yearly figure is the steady return per year that would give the same result, so you can compare things held for different lengths of time.

Common questions

What counts as a good ROI?

It depends on the risk and the time. Compare it with your alternatives, such as paying down debt or keeping cash, and with what similar investments in your trade usually return.

What should I count as invested?

Everything it cost you: the price, plus setup, repairs, fees and your own time if you value it. Leaving costs out makes the return look better than it is.

Is ROI the same as profit margin?

No. ROI compares profit with what you put in. Margin compares profit with the price you sold for. Our markup and margin calculator covers margin.
