Invoice app and templates for electricians
Service calls, materials, permits and inspections. An electrical invoice should show what was done, what was passed through and what is covered.

Electrical work mixes small repairs and big projects, and the paperwork differs between them. A tripped breaker is a service call. A panel upgrade is a quoted project with a permit and an inspection. Both need an invoice that tells the client what they bought and what you are responsible for.
What makes electrical invoices different
- Permits and inspections are costs outside your labour. The client should see them on their own line.
- Materials range from a few dollars for a receptacle to hundreds for a breaker panel, and the larger items deserve their own lines.
- A fixed-price quote is common for installations, so the invoice often needs to match the quote line by line.
- Clients want to know the work is safe and complete, so a note of what was done and tested is worth including.

What goes on an electrical invoice
- A service call or minimum charge, shown on its own.
- Labour hours and rate, or the fixed price if the job was quoted.
- Major materials by name, such as breakers, panels and fixtures, with their prices.
- Permit and inspection fees, listed as pass-through costs at what you paid.
- A brief description of the work and what was tested, so the invoice doubles as a record.
Example: add two outlets and a ceiling fan circuit
| Item | Qty | Price | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service call | 1 | $90.00 | $90.00 |
| Labour (hours) | 3.5 | $105.00 | $367.50 |
| Outlets and cover plates | 2 | $9.50 | $19.00 |
| Wire, boxes and fittings | 1 | $38.00 | $38.00 |
| Permit fee (passed through at cost) | 1 | $75.00 | $75.00 |
| Total | $589.50 |
Total $589.50. The permit is shown at what you paid, so the client sees it is not part of your margin. Permit requirements vary by area, so check what applies where you work.

Three billing problems electricians run into
Permits paid out of pocket
A permit you pay and forget to bill is money lost. Add it to the estimate and the invoice, at cost, every time it applies.
Quotes that drift from invoices
If the invoice does not match the quote, the client assumes a mistake. Build the invoice from the accepted estimate so the lines match, and add only approved extras.
Material price swings
Copper and equipment prices move. Put a validity date on estimates, and invoice materials at actual cost plus your markup.
Estimates, deposits and getting paid
For installations, send a written estimate listing what is and is not included, such as patching and painting after cutting into a wall. Take a deposit when you must order a panel or fixtures. Our guides on writing an estimate and on deposits cover the details.
How Invoice Mint fits electrical work
- Save your service call, hourly rate and common materials so an invoice takes a few taps.
- Convert an accepted estimate to an invoice so the lines match the quote.
- Send the invoice as a link as soon as the work is tested, from the site.
- See which clients have opened the invoice and which have paid.
How much do electricians make?
In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts the median annual wage for electricians at $63,190 as of May 2025, about $30.38 an hour. BLS projects 9 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| The lowest-paid tenth earn less than | $42,640 |
| Median wage | $63,190 |
| The highest-paid tenth earn more than | $108,510 |
| Projected job growth, 2025 to 2035 | 9 percent |
These figures are for employees. BLS wage data does not include self-employed workers, so an owner’s income depends on the prices they charge, the work they win and the costs they carry. Say you want to take home the median, $63,190, and your van, test equipment, licence fees, insurance and software cost $15,000 a year. If you can bill 1,300 hours (most of a self-employed year goes on quoting, driving, buying materials and paperwork), you need $60.15 for each billable hour just to get there, before tax and before any profit.
Do electricians need a licence, and how long is the training?
BLS says most states require electricians to be licensed, with requirements that vary by state. Most electricians learn the trade in a four- or five-year apprenticeship, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year. Requirements differ by state, and rules in other countries are different, so confirm them with your local authority.
Taxes and costs when you run an electrical business
In the United States, self-employed people pay self-employment tax of 15.3 percent, made up of 12.4 percent for Social Security and 2.9 percent for Medicare, on top of income tax. The IRS also says they may have to pay estimated tax every quarter. Costs that are specific to electrical work include:
- Licence and permit fees, and the time spent arranging inspections.
- Test equipment that needs replacing or recalibrating.
- Insurance for work inside people’s homes.
- Your van and a stock of common materials.
- Time spent on quotes that do not turn into jobs.
Rules in Canada, Australia, the UK and elsewhere are different, so check with your own tax office. A habit that works everywhere: move a fixed share of every payment into a separate account the day it arrives, and ask an accountant what share suits your income.

Common questions
How do I invoice permits and inspections?
Show them as separate lines at the amount you paid. Clients understand pass-through costs when they can see they are not part of your labour or markup.
Should I quote or bill by the hour?
Quotes suit installations with a clear scope. Hourly billing suits repairs and troubleshooting, where the time is unknown. Many electricians use both and say which applies on the estimate.
What should an electrician put in the job description?
A short account of what was installed or repaired and what was tested. It helps the client, and it helps you if a question comes up later.
Is there a free electrician invoice template?
Yes. The free invoice and estimate templates can be edited for electrical work and downloaded as a PDF, Word file or Excel sheet.
